Solving for Symptoms Instead of the Root Cause

Tom's recurring critique of the HR technology market is that many companies get caught chasing whatever trend is current, whether that's a new wellness perk or the latest AI feature, and end up solving for symptoms rather than the underlying question of whether their culture is thriving or decaying. He argues that the "warm and fuzzy" framing of recognition and employee experience is the easy part of the conversation; the harder and more important argument is proving the ROI of recognition in terms that move a budget conversation, not just an engagement survey. On DEI specifically, he's been vocal that treating it as a three-year program with an end date misunderstands the assignment: it has to be a permanent part of an organization's cultural contract with its employees and the markets it serves, not a campaign with a finish line.
