Joanne Chang is a James Beard Award-winning pastry chef, entrepreneur, and the founder of Flour Bakery, which she opened in Boston in 2000. More than two decades later, she operates eleven Flour bakeries and the restaurant Myers + Chang across Boston and Cambridge alongside her husband and business partner, Christopher Myers.

Her story is one of building something lasting from a single storefront. What started as one bakery grew into a beloved local institution with national recognition from Gourmet, Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, the New York Times, the Food Network, Condé Nast Traveler, Inc. Magazine, O Magazine, Boston Magazine, and the Boston Globe. In 2016, she received the James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker.

Building a business, and a team, that grows with you

Today, Joanne leads a multi-location business while staying close to the craft that started it all. She teaches and advises pastry cooks inside her own bakeries, at area cooking schools, and virtually through her Bake Like a Pro session on MasterClass. She also appeared as a judge on the first season of Netflix’s competition show Baking Impossible.

Her perspective connects directly to what people leaders care about most. Scaling from one bakery to eleven means developing people, passing on standards, and keeping a culture intact as a team grows. That lens makes her a natural fit for leaders working on culture, performance, and retention at the same time.

Joanne is the author of five cookbooks, with a sixth on the way. She serves on the Board of Directors for Share Our Strength and Beacon Financial Corporation.
