Leading From a Place to Stand, Not a Predicted Future
At a recent Achieve Engagement webinar on leading through uncertainty, Gerardo offered a distinction between a "stand," a position a leader declares, such as committing to transparent communication, and a "place to stand," the identity that position is actually built on. The difference shows up under pressure: a leader who has only taken a stand will quietly make exceptions once it gets expensive, while a leader with a genuine place to stand doesn't relitigate the commitment when things get hard. He also argues that most strategic plans are really just extrapolation with better formatting, and that the alternative is deciding on a genuinely created future and reverse-engineering what has to be true this year to make it real, illustrated by his example of a steel manufacturer that resolved a strike by having management and the union co-create a future bigger than either side's original position.
