MassPay (now MP: Wired for HR): Payroll and HR Built on Personal Service

MassPay was founded in 2004 in Beverly, Massachusetts, by Jason Maxwell, who previously worked at Intuit and ADP and serves as the company's Founder and CEO (CB Insights; PRNewswire, 2021). The company was built to give small business owners a more personally attentive alternative to large, multinational payroll providers (Yelp, 2026). In January 2021, MassPay rebranded to MP: Wired for HR to reflect its growth from a Massachusetts payroll company into a nationwide HCM solutions provider serving more than 1,300 clients across all 50 states (PRNewswire, January 2021). MP has been included on the Inc 5000 and Boston Business Journal Fast 50 lists consecutively since 2013, and has been recognized with a Stevie Award for customer service and named a Best Place to Work by the Boston Business Journal (PRNewswire, 2021).

What MP does

MP is an independent reseller of the isolved HCM platform, delivering payroll, time and attendance, talent management, benefits administration and ACA compliance, and learning management, paired with dedicated HR consulting services and full-cycle professional recruitment (MP, 2026). The company positions its differentiation around personal service rather than technology alone: dedicated account teams that average 4.4 years of tenure, a 95 percent call answer rate, and 100 percent on-time implementation, explicitly contrasting itself with larger vendors where account managers rotate frequently (MP, 2026, citing the company's own metrics). MP serves industries including healthcare and home care, manufacturing and logistics, professional services, hospitality and retail, and nonprofit organizations, with tailored features for each, such as credential-expiration tracking for healthcare and grant tracking for nonprofits.

Where it fits

MP serves organizations from 10 to more than 1,000 employees, and reports 2,200-plus client companies with a 96 percent client retention rate (MP, 2026, citing the company's own figures). It's a fit for small and mid-sized businesses that want the same underlying HCM technology larger enterprises use, but paired with a smaller, more consistent, and more responsive service team than they'd typically get from a large national payroll vendor.

Why this matters for people leaders

Payroll and HR platform switches are notoriously painful when the underlying software is solid but the service around it is inconsistent, long hold times, rotating account managers, generic troubleshooting that doesn't account for a specific industry's quirks. MP's bet is that for many growing businesses, the differentiator isn't which HCM platform they're on, since most competitors converge on similar core technology, but who answers the phone when something goes wrong. For organizations focused on Culture, Performance, and Retention, that reliability matters more than it might seem: payroll errors and slow HR support are among the fastest ways to erode employee trust, regardless of how good the rest of the employee experience is.
