Indeed: The World's Highest-Traffic Job Site

Indeed is a global employment website and job search platform launched in November 2004 by co-founders Paul Forster and Rony Kahan (Wikipedia; Golden). The company is headquartered in Austin, Texas, with a second major hub in Stamford, Connecticut, and additional offices worldwide (Wikipedia). Indeed became a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan's Recruit Holdings in September 2012, after operating independently and raising early funding from The New York Times, Allen & Company, and Union Square Ventures (Recruit Holdings; Golden, 2026). Recruit Holdings also owns Glassdoor, which it acquired separately in 2018 for $1.2 billion, giving the two platforms a shared parent company (Wikipedia). By October 2010, Indeed had passed Monster.com to become the highest-traffic job site in the United States, a position it has held since (Wikipedia).

What Indeed does

Indeed aggregates job listings from thousands of sources, including individual employer career pages, staffing firms, and other job boards, and makes them searchable for job seekers free of charge. Employers can pay to sponsor listings for greater visibility, which is the company's primary revenue model, alongside resume and employer-branding tools (Golden, 2026). Indeed operates in more than 60 countries and 28 languages, and has expanded into adjacent hiring tools including automated screening (Indeed Assessments), video interviewing (Indeed Interview), and AI-driven job matching (Recruit Holdings history page, 2026).

Where it fits

Indeed is built for employers of every size, from small businesses posting their first job to large enterprises running high-volume recruiting, and for job seekers across every industry and experience level. It's a fit for HR and talent acquisition teams that need broad candidate reach and want to combine free and paid posting strategies depending on the role and market.

Why this matters for people leaders

Indeed's scale gives it a uniquely broad view into hiring trends: wage data, application volumes, and labor market shifts across industries and regions in near real time. For people leaders focused on Culture, Performance, and Retention, that data matters beyond the immediate hiring funnel. Understanding how the broader labor market is moving, where candidate supply is tightening, where compensation expectations are shifting, shapes decisions about retention strategy and internal mobility just as much as it shapes external recruiting.
