EBSCOlearning: Corporate and Workforce Learning From an 80-Year-Old Family Business

EBSCOlearning is a division of EBSCO Information Services offering corporate learning, educational, and career development products for businesses, schools, and workforce development organizations. EBSCO Information Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of EBSCO Industries, a family-owned company founded in 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama, by Elton B. Stephens and his wife Alys, who started by supplying reading materials to US military bases through a mail-order subscription and rack service (MatrixBCG, 2026). EBSCOlearning's current portfolio was substantially built through acquisition, most notably LearningExpress, a corporate and adult-learning content provider founded by Barry Lippman, which joined EBSCO Information Services and brought more than 1,500 hours of instructional content developed by 200-plus subject-matter experts (EBSCO press release, 2015). Annie Callanan became CEO of EBSCO Information Services in August 2024 (Library Technology Guides, 2026).

What EBSCOlearning does

EBSCOlearning offers flexible, self-guided digital learning across several areas: academic test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE), core skills development in math, science, and English, computer and technical training, and career and workforce development tools including an AI-powered resume builder within its Job & Career Accelerator resource (EBSCO, 2026). The division also runs specialized workforce platforms, including BlueCareer, which connects users to information on more than 100 skilled trades and hundreds of trade schools, and tools supporting individuals transitioning from military to civilian careers. EBSCOlearning products are distributed largely through libraries, schools, colleges, and workforce development centers, extending their reach well beyond direct corporate clients.

Where it fits

EBSCOlearning serves businesses, educational institutions, libraries, and workforce development organizations, making it a fit both for employers building internal learning and career pathways and for community-facing organizations, libraries and workforce centers, that support job seekers and career changers directly. It's a fit for organizations that want access to established, broadly validated learning content rather than building custom curricula from scratch, particularly for foundational skills, test prep, and career transition support.

Why this matters for people leaders

EBSCOlearning's distribution through libraries and public workforce centers, not just direct corporate sales, means its tools reach a genuinely broad population, including job seekers who may not yet be inside any organization's formal talent pipeline. For organizations focused on Culture, Performance, and Retention, that broader reach matters when building talent pipelines or supporting community-facing workforce development, since a resource that already exists at libraries and workforce centers can complement internal L&D programs rather than duplicating what a company would otherwise have to build from scratch.
