Chicago Leadership Exchange: The Most Overlooked Driver of Organizational Change

October 2, 2026
Morgan’s on Fulton
9:00 am - 12:30 pm CST
Exchange details

You can buy the technology. You can write the strategy. Neither one changes how people actually work.

Behavior changes when it is reinforced, and most organizations have no plan for that. 66% of leaders say recognition is very important to business performance. Only 33% say their program is effective at it. That gap is where strategies quietly stall, where AI rollouts turn into licenses nobody uses, and where good people disconnect long before they resign.

The Chicago Leadership EXchange brings together in house HR and people leaders into one room for a working morning on the mechanism most change plans leave out. We open with new research from the Achievers Workforce Institute on building AI ready organizations, then put the room to work: two peer exchanges where you bring your own 2027 priorities and pressure test them with peers, and a panel of leaders who have carried a transformation past the pilot stage and will tell you where it stalled.

WHAT YOU WILL LEAVE WITH

  • Your top 2027 priority translated into two named, observable behaviors
  • A clear read on the gap between what your organization says matters and what it actually rewards
  • Honest answers from CHROs and CPOs on where transformation stalls and what restarted it

Vulnerability normalizes mental health, which is huge in organizations. We work in hierarchical structures, so employees always look above to determine what's appropriate. Be comfortable having uncomfortable conversations. If you can't do that, you can't be an effective leader.

The achieve Engagement Leadership Network has become one of my favorite professional spaces. It's rare to find a community where you can connect with others who are truly in the trenches doing similar work. Speakers consistently share best practices they've actually tested, and I frequently walk away thinking, 'I can adapt this for us.'

Agenda

A Program Designed for Breakthroughs.

9:00 AM

Check-In & Continental Breakfast

The room officially opens. Come join early, check-in, network and enjoy some morning coffee & snacks

9:30 AM

Welcome & Introductions - The Question This Morning Answers

We open with the one question the room is here to work on: what is your organization actually reinforcing, and is it what your strategy needs. A short welcome, the shape of the morning, and the ground rules for a practitioner room.

9:40 AM

Opening Keynote: Building AI Ready Organizations Through Recognition

Recognition has always been one of the most powerful tools for shaping behavior. In the age of AI, it may be the most overlooked. Organizations are investing heavily in new technology, but lasting transformation depends on whether people adopt new ways of working, and the behaviors AI requires do not become habits through training alone. They take root when they are consistently reinforced.

Drawing on new research from the Achievers Workforce Institute, this session explores why AI transformation is fundamentally a people challenge, how recognition acts as a real time signal for what matters during periods of change, and how it builds the trust, clarity, and confidence that adaptable organizations run on. You will leave with practical insight into how recognition turns AI from another technology rollout into a sustainable shift in how work gets done.

10:15 AM

Peer Exchange 1: Does Your Culture Reward What Your Strategy Requires?

Most strategies get communicated. Very few get reinforced. In this exchange you put a real 2027 priority on the table, name the behavior it depends on, and audit what your organization actually celebrates today.

Discussion prompts:

  1. Write your top strategic priority for 2027 in one sentence. Now name the specific behavior it depends on. How many people outside this room could name the same one?
  2. If a new hire spent thirty days watching who gets praised in your company, what would they conclude the strategy is?
  3. What is your compensation, promotion, or review system reinforcing that your strategy does not actually want?
10:50 AM

Mid Program Break

11:05 AM

Panel Discussion: Rollout to Reflex, What Actually Made It Stick

Learn directly from people leaders who have carried a real transformation past the pilot stage. Get inside insights where adoption stalled, what actually restarted it, what they had to stop doing to make room for a new way of working, and what they would tell a peer who is looking to build this as a part of thier culture. Moderated, with the last ten minutes open to the room.

11:40 AM

Peer Exchange 2: Connection to People, Peers, Managers, and Resources

Employees report feeling increasingly disconnected from their managers, their colleagues, and the purpose behind their work, at exactly the moment organizations need them to be more adaptable than ever. This exchange takes the human half of that gap: where people go when they are stuck, who they know well enough to ask, and what happened to those relationships over the last three years. Retention treated as sustained performance over time rather than a turnover number.

Discussion prompts:

  1. When someone in your organization is stuck, where do they go? Do they know, and is that the path you designed?
  2. What has happened to peer connection in your organization over the last three years? Be specific about what was lost and what caused it.
  3. Who in your organization gets recognized by nobody, and what does your data say happens to them next?
12:15 PM

Closing Remarks: The Room Report Out

We read back what the room actually said. The behaviors that came up on multiple tables, the sharpest line from each exchange, and a commitment or two read aloud. Every attendee receives a synthesis of the research behind the morning.

12:30 PM

Optional Networking Lunch

Lunch is served and the conversation keeps going. Stay as long as your calendar allows.
